Anthurium and. 'Diamond Red'
The tropical red flaming leaves of this plant are the absolute eye-catcher of your living room. Anthurium andreamum shows a splendid contrast between its large dark green leaves and the intense and beautiful red colour of its ‘flowers’.
Did you know that the real flower of your Anthurium plant is a tiny little dot that sits on the spadix of the plant together with hundreds of other tiny flowers. The spadix is the white stem that rises up above the red spathes, the red leaves. Each and every single one of these minuscule flowers contains both a pistil and stamens.
As the flowers ripen you will find little drops of nectar on the spadix. A week or so later, after the nectar has been eaten by insects, the stamens will become ripe for fertilisation. This way the plant protects itself from in-breeding.
The red spathe with its bright colour serves solely to attract insects to the real flower.
It is a robust plant that you can easily place in the darker corners of your home, so that it can cheer them up. You can create something very special by planting four or five Anthuriums together in a big basket or tray and thereby adding a touch of the tropics to your interior.
