Product Description
Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady' is a lovely trunk forming fern appearing when mature like a mini tree fern, originating from the warm moist forests of Fiji and the Pacific islands where it grows as an understorey plant amongst the giant trees.
Light Conditions
- Indoor: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may slow growth and lead to less vibrant foliage.
- Outdoor: Grows well in partial shade to full shade. In tropical regions, it can tolerate some morning sun but should be protected from the harsh afternoon sun.
Water Requirements
- Indoor: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
- Outdoor: In garden settings, regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. The soil should be well-draining to prevent waterlogging.
Temperature & Humidity
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures ranging from 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity levels. Indoor plants benefit from regular misting, a humidity tray, or the use of a humidifier, especially in dry climates or during winter when indoor air tends to be drier.
Height & Growth Rate
- Height: Typically grows to about 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm) in height and spreads about the same width.
- Growth Rate: Generally considered a moderate grower. Growth can be more vigorous under optimal conditions with adequate humidity, warmth, and consistent moisture.
Origin
- Native Region: Blechnum gibbum is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific Islands, including New Caledonia and Fiji.
- Habitat: In its natural habitat, it grows in shaded, moist forest environments where it benefits from the warm, humid climate.
Additional Care Tips
- Soil: Prefers a well-draining, rich organic potting mix. A mix designed for ferns or a combination of peat, perlite, and pine bark works well.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during the fall and winter months when growth naturally slows.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound to refresh the soil and provide space for growth.
This fern is well-loved for its lush appearance and adaptability to indoor environments, making it an excellent choice for adding greenery to homes and offices.
